Description

Chilton Priory is a folly that was significantly enlarged to become a country house. The tower and rear wing were built in 1836 for William Stradling, an antiquarian and collector, to house his collection. Additional parts were added in the mid to late 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations. The building incorporates re-used medieval and later features. It is constructed of coursed and squared rubble with freestone dressings, featuring embattled parapets and flat bitumenised roofs, along with rubble stacks. The earliest section is in a Gothick style, while the later additions are in a Tudor style with mock-military elements, resulting in an irregular plan and elevations.

The tower, located next to the roadside, has three storeys and features diagonal buttresses with offsets, an octagonal stair turret, and an oriel window on the first floor. The stone-mullioned and transomed windows, along with single light windows with cusped heads and iron casements on the second floor, add to its character. Below the battlements, there is a string course adorned with gargoyles. Attached to the east of the tower is a single-storey wing with lancet windows featuring cusped heads and a gabled porch to the south, which has a door opening in a re-used Perpendicular surround, dated 1616. The attached ranges to the south and east are two storeys high, with stone mullioned windows, lancets, turrets, and angular bays.

Interior features of interest are mainly found in the earlier part of the building and include a re-used 17th-century altar rail, medieval stained glass, carved corbels, and a fireplace set in a massive freestone surround. The attached garage and outbuildings to the east are not considered of special interest.
