Description
Clapton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1615, with early 18th century and later modifications. It is built from local stone that is cut and squared, featuring ashlar dressings and a stone slate roof with a coped gable on the west side and a plain gable on the east. The building has brick end chimney stacks and is arranged in a U-plan, consisting of two storeys with an attic and four bays.
The farmhouse has transitional mullioned windows with architraved surrounds under labels, mostly consisting of three lights, with leaded panes and internal vertical iron bars. Each window has a central casement with wrought iron catches and stay brackets. The second bay features a projecting coped gabled full-height porch with a chamfered arched outer doorway that lacks a label, situated above a small plaque with strapwork decoration, initials TN/KN, and the date 1615. Inside the porch, there is a moulded frame around the doorway leading into the house. On the first floor, there is a three-light window, along with a two-light window in the attic.
On the west gable, there are reserved chamfered mullioned windows with labels, which likely represent the original pattern of the main elevation windows. These consist of two lights on the ground and first floors, and a single light in the attic, which is now blocked. The interior has been significantly altered, although many changes appear to be from the early 18th century. The interior features mostly six-panel doors, but one 17th century chevron-decorated ledged and boarded door remains in the center of the lower room, which is the only part of the ground floor that was inspected.
