Description
The Limekiln Complex, dating from the mid-19th century, is located on the seashore at Lilstock Beach in Stringston. It is constructed of blue lias random rubble with some brick infill. The complex features a retaining wall approximately 45 metres long, which is built into the hillside and rises to about 10 metres in height at the center. To the left of a blocked limekiln, there is a buttressed, tunnel-vaulted shed, along with an unidentified recess beyond it. There are also two segmental-headed openings to the left that provide access to small, rectangular tunnel-vaulted rooms, which have remains of walls set at right angles. The site is approached from above by a flight of steps that is about 25 metres long. As of August 1983, the complex was noted to be in poor condition and partially overgrown. This structure is all that remains of the port of Lilstock, which was developed by the Aclands in the early 19th century. By 1848, there were resident coastguards, and by 1855, a customs officer was present. The port facilitated the transport of Welsh coal and pit props, and pleasure steamers visited in the 1860s and 70s. The complex is listed primarily for its historic interest.
