Description

Grisley's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with enlargements made in the late 17th to early 18th centuries, and possibly some alterations in the 19th century. The building is rendered over rubble and features a pantiled roof with a large rendered stack located between the second and third bays on the left, as well as a remaining stack at the right gable end and a brick stack rising from an outshot at the rear.

The farmhouse has a three-cell and cross passage plan, with an outshot at the rear and is set gable end onto the road. It is two storeys high with five bays; the first floor has early 19th century leaded iron casements, some of which have quadrant stays, while the ground floor features a mix of 19th and 20th century casements. The entrance is located in the second bay on the right, consisting of a half-glazed door with two pointed arch lights and coloured glass, likely from the late 19th century, topped with a slate pentice hood supported by decorative wooden brackets.

Although the interior was not viewed, it is said to contain chamfered beams with enriched stops and a staircase turret that is concealed by the outshot, which also houses several ovens, including one very large oven that is probably from the 19th century, dating back to when the farmhouse served as the local bakery. An attractive feature of the property is the long sweep of the catslide roof over the outshot, which is clearly visible from the Burton-Stogursey road.
