Description

Ash Cottage and Little Ash are a farmhouse, originally comprising three dwellings, dating back to the 16th century. A rear wing was added in the 17th century, and Little Ash cottage was restored in the late 20th century. The walls are rendered over random rubble, with the rendering incomplete on the left side. The roof is covered in double Roman tiles, and there are brick stacks at the left gable end, to the left of the entrance to Ash Cottage, to the left of the entrance to Little Ash, and at the right gable end. The plan is unclear, but Ash Cottage features a three-cell addition at the rear, flanked by two flights of steps, one of which is divided.

The main house is two storeys high and five bays wide. The first floor has three-light casement windows with leaded panes. The ground floor has four-light circular moulded wooden mullion windows with leaded panes flanking the entrance to Ash Cottage and the centre of Little Ash. There is a 20th-century leaded casement in a gabled porch to the left, and a four-light casement to the right of the entrance to Little Ash. Both entrances have plank doors and tiled porches with weatherboarded gable ends.

Inside Ash Cottage, there is a blocked fireplace on the left cross passage wall. The right wall has been moved back to create two unheated rooms, and a kitchen has been added. A possible bacon curing chamber is located to the left of the fireplace. Above the fireplace, the plasterwork is obscured by a water tank. There are lathe and plaster partitions, and an unusual stair arrangement. The interior of Little Ash was not inspected.
