Description

Brookside Fishers is a farmhouse, dating to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and altered in the 19th century. It has been partially restored in the late 20th century and is now divided. The building is rendered over rubble, with triple Roman tiles and brick stacks situated left and right of centre, below the roofline. Originally, it comprised three cells and a cross passage, with outshots at the rear flanking the entrance to the cross passage known as Brookside.

The garden front has two storeys and four bays. It features 20th-century windows, including three two-light casements on the left, a cruciform window on the right, and a three-light casement on either side of the cross passage entrance. A small glazed opening, a C20 window, and a further C20 window are also present. A single-storey gabled addition, not included in the listing, is set to the right.

Inside, there are chamfered beams with stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The end room on the left has a fireplace with a chamfered lintel set against the cross passage wall, concealing a winder stair, now a cupboard. The central room features a winder stair to the left of a large open fireplace with a chamfered lintel and a smoke-blackened curing chamber to the right, now accessed from the rear (Brookside) and lit by a small glazed opening on the garden front. The roof is of collar and principal construction, with lath and plaster partitions. The unusual internal arrangement suggests the building may have originally been constructed as two cottages and later enlarged.
