Description

Cedar Falls is a country house located in Bishop's Lydeard, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with later enlargements in the late 19th century and restoration in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red sandstone random rubble, originally rendered, and features stone dressings. It has a hipped slate roof and a wooden cornice with dentil moulding on the main block, while a flat-roofed addition to the north has a stone cornice and rendered stacks.

The house is two storeys high and has five bays on the main façade, with each bay marked by full-height pilasters that lack bases or capitals and support an entablature interrupted by window lintels. The south front originally had a 1:2:1 bay arrangement, with the outer bays having hipped roofs that project slightly forward. The first floor features 12-pane sash windows in raised surrounds with console brackets supporting the lintels, while the ground floor has three-light sash windows topped with curved segmental pediments over the center light, also with console brackets and raised surrounds.

The entrance is located in the second bay from the left and consists of 19th-century double doors with marginal glazing bars, approached by three steps under a Tuscan Doric portico with paired columns. The west end bay now contains two windows, and there is a five-light canted bay addition with one bay beyond.

Inside, the dining room features Jacobean-style panelling and geometric plasterwork adorned with animal portraits. The addition on the north front showcases more elaborate plasterwork, likely from the late 19th century. 19th-century panelling and plasterwork can also be found in other rooms.
