Description
The lych gate at the entrance to the churchyard of the Church of St Matthew was designed by F. Bligh Bond and built by Pittards of Langport. It was dedicated in January 1916 and donated by Miss Badcock in memory of her sister. The gate features rubble plinths with dressed freestone cappings, an oak superstructure, and a shingled roof with a bellcast and wheel-cross finials, all in a medieval style. The massive structure includes four main posts, arch bracing, and bridging beams, with the roof ridge positioned at right angles to the frontage. The ends of the exposed beams are carved with grotesque masks. The bridging beam at the front has the inscription "MORS IANVA VITAE". The gate includes gates.
