Description
Ashford Mills is a watermill and house that likely dates back to the 17th century. The building features a mix of ham stone rubble, some ashlar, and rendered work on the house, which has a corrugated iron sheet roof with bargeboarded gables. The mill has a Welsh slate roof and brick chimney stacks. The structure is arranged in a 'T' plan. The house is two storeys tall with three bays. It has three-light leaded casement windows of an early pattern, with iron-framed central opening lights and labels over the lower windows. There is a boarded door in a heavy frame located in the lower bay 2. A lean-to is attached to the south gable, and a cast-iron pump is found on the north side of the house.
The mill extends from the rear of the house and has a north-west elevation that is three storeys high, with an attic and four bays. Bay 1 features a door below and a small leaded casement at the second floor level. Bay 2 includes a three-light horizontal-bar casement on the ground floor and a six-spoke cast-iron mill wheel adapted as a window on the first floor. Bay 3 has a door below and a two-light horizontal-bar casement on the first floor. Bay 4 contains a door, a part-leaded three-light casement on the first floor, and a small two-light casement on the second floor. Between bays 3 and 4, there is a cantilevered corrugated iron-clad sack-hoist on timber brackets, topped with a pitched roof. The interiors have not been seen.
