Description
The churchyard cross, located 5 metres south of the porch of the Church of St Mary, dates from the late 14th century and was restored in the early 20th century. It is made of sandstone and concrete and features a two-stage calvary. The cross has an octagonal shape on a wide square plinth with broached corners, leading to an octagonal tapering shaft. The broached corners and metal ties have been renewed with concrete. At the top, it is surmounted by an abacus that is richly carved with foliage, which supports a pierced head that is also highly ornamented, though somewhat eroded. Each face of the cross is adorned with a pair of trefoil-headed canopied niches divided by a mullion. The east side features an enlarged niche for the Holy Rood, while the west side depicts the Virgin and child. The north and south faces display a bishop and a knight, respectively, in canopied niches. This cross is a rare example of a highly ornamental type of churchyard cross and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Somerset County No. 250).
