Description
The Govett family chest tomb, located in the churchyard one metre west of the porch of the Church of St Mary, dates from the early 17th century. It is constructed from sandstone and blue lias. The tomb features a flat top with a cavetto moulded cornice and a sunk plinth. All faces of the tomb are inscribed in fine lettering, although the inscription on the south face has been removed and replaced with a blue lias panel. The earliest inscription, found on the north face, commemorates John Garett, who died in 1618. This tomb is part of a group of early, finely inscribed chest tombs that includes the Prior family chest tomb.
