Description
This is a mid-18th century direction stone located south of Middle Chinnock at the junction of Foxwell Lane and the A30. Made from Ham Hill stone, the marker dates from around 1745 and features a pointing hand carved into its surface. The stone stands approximately 80 centimeters high and tapers from a base measuring 35 centimeters by 33 centimeters to a top measuring 24 centimeters by 22 centimeters. The hand indicates the direction to named principal destinations, although the distances are not provided. On the south face, a cuffed hand points west, and below it are the remains of letters that may spell C (REWKE / RNE ROAD). Above the pointing hand are additional letters including Y (EO) VI (L) / R (OAD). The letters on the east face are illegible, but at the very top of this face, there are remnants of an Ordnance Survey Bench Mark.
