Description

This is a school and attached schoolhouse, dated 1857 and designed by William Butterfield for the Duke of Cork and Orrery. The building is constructed from squared and coursed Doulting rubble with an asbestos tile roof, featuring coped verges and four ashlar stacks with moulded caps, two of which spring from the front eaves and are decorated with a gabled niche.

The building follows an irregular plan and is of Gothic design. It is one and two storeys high and has a 1:1:1 bay arrangement. The left bay has a tall, two-light pointed head window with stone tracery and a scrolled dripmould. The centre bay features paired two-light mullioned windows, each light with a blank cusped head. The right bay is an angular, projecting wing with offsets under a pyramidal roof, incorporating two lancets on the ground floor and a two-light pointed head opening in the gablet. There are paired plank door openings to the centre, with the right door featuring an elaborate combined latch and knocker. A recessed plaque, cut in stone, bears the inscription "For The Benefit of The Poor And In Memory of His father Edmund 8th Earl of Cork, Richard Boyl Rector of Marston Built This School”.
