Description
Channel View Stockland Manor, formerly Stockland Manor and now divided into three dwellings, was built in the 1860s for Thomas Daniel, the rector of the parish. The building is constructed of coursed and squared blue lias rubble with Bath Stone dressings. It features slate roofs with fish tail bands, moulded stone eaves cornices with rosettes, crested ridges, and octagonal ashlar stacks, appearing singly, in pairs, or in groups of three and four. The architectural style is described as Muscular Gothic, with a roughly square plan.
The manor house is two storeys high with a basement and attic. The front elevation has a 1:2:1 bay arrangement. The first and fourth bays project forward under gabled roofs with copings and finials. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed, with four-centred arches to each light, stopped labels, and a canted oriel of four lights to the left of the first floor, also in a similar style, topped with a pierced parapet. A moulded band runs along the first floor level, and a moulded sill band is present below. A projecting stack is visible to the right of the front elevation.
The entrance features a four-centred arch door opening within a two-order dressed stone surround; the spandrels are decorated with quatrefoils and feature a stopped label. The doors themselves are paired and studded.
The interior is largely complete, including a broad well staircase with a lantern, turned and twisted balusters, a moulded handrail, and newel posts with large finials. There are two ground floor ceilings with elaborate coffering, and multiple fireplaces in a Gothic style, some of which are blocked.
Historical context suggests the building was commissioned for Thomas Daniel, the parish rector.
