Description
The pigsty, located southwest of the community centre on Barton Road in Berrow, is a Grade II listed structure, likely dating from the 17th century and restored in 1963. It is built from random rubble stone and has a circular plan topped with a conical roof.
The upper parts of the walls are gently corbelled inward to meet at the apex, which features a stone finial. On the southeast side, there is a small square-headed entrance leading into the interior of the sty.
Although not inspected, it is believed that the pigsty was used as a farrowing house, but it is unclear if it was built for this purpose or if it repurposed an existing ruin. Its circular design is a variation of the conventional pigsty, commonly found in the southern half of Wales and also seen in Mediterranean countries, but rarely in England. The First Edition Ordnance Survey map from 1886 shows the pigsty situated on the southern edge of a field.
The pigsty is designated at Grade II due to its historic interest as a rare example of a circular pigsty, which serves as an important reminder of traditional farming practices, and its substantial intactness despite mid-20th century restoration.
