Description

The roadside cross, dated 1818, is located on the north side of Ward Lane in Chedzoy. It was originally set on a 15th-century socket and base, which are now missing or possibly buried. The cross is made of dressed stone and consists of a tapering square-section shaft topped with a repaired Maltese Cross head. Each face just below the head features shields in a quatrefoil design, along with masonic devices. On the south side, there is a small zinc plate inscribed with the words: 'Hanc Crucern Evexit Guiellius Stradling AD 1818'. William Stradling, an antiquary, lived in the nearby Chilton Polden during the 18th century.
