Description
This is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with additions and alterations made in the 17th century and an extension to the rear in the early 19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of blue lias rubble stone with a raking buttress to the right-hand bay. The roof is thatched, with coped verges and kneelers. Stone stacks are situated at the gable ends and to the left of the cross passage, with the stack on the right having been renewed. The building follows an L-shape with a parallel range at the rear.
The main block is two storeys high, with three bays. The ground floor windows in this block have square hood moulds, and are generally three-light casements with multiple panes. The window on the ground floor to the left is a four-light casement with ovolo moulding. A central gabled porch features a finely moulded inner doorframe and a contemporary studded plank door with long hinges. A projection on the right return is a bread oven extending outwards. The crosswing to the left has an unlit gable end and 4 and 5-light ovolo moulded leaded casements on the first floor, one of which projects through the eaves. One gable end is said to be dated 1637 with the initials “RS.MS.” Some early 19th-century leaded iron casements are located at the rear. The interior remains unseen.
A wall, dating from the 18th century and renewed in the late 20th century, runs along the south gable end. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond with a moulded plinth. The upper courses of the wall have been renewed, and the wall has a flat coping approximately 1.5 metres high, extending around 50 metres.
