Description

Brymore School, originally a country house, is now an agricultural school. It consists of three distinct sections: a late 18th-century wing on the left, a 15th-century porch in the center, and a late 19th-century wing on the right. The 18th-century wing is roughcast with a plain band at the first floor level, a moulded cornice, a parapet, and a hipped slate roof with brick stacks. It has three storeys and five bays, featuring 12-pane sash windows, except for the second floor which has 6-pane sash windows, all with slightly cambered heads.

The central porch is a low two-storey structure made of rubble, with two-stage angle buttresses and an embattled parapet adorned with heraldic shields. It has a restored moulded pointed arch door opening with a label, paired ribbed and studded doors, and a single two-light stone mullioned and transomed window above, which has a cinquefoiled head and sub-arches with leaded lights and a label.

The three-storey, three-bay wing on the right features rubble brick dressings, a moulded cornice, and a parapet. It has 12-pane sash windows, except for the second floor which has 6-pane sash windows. The ground floor includes an embattled angular bay with a four-light stone mullioned window, each light having a cusped head.

Inside the 18th-century wing, notable features include fine cornices, two fireplaces on the ground floor—one with a marble surround supported by thin detached Tuscan columns, and another with a moulded wooden surround featuring a frieze of figures. There is also a lofty open-well staircase with cast-iron balusters, a moulded handrail, and stone treads. John Pym, the politician, was born here in 1582.
