Description
Littleton House is a house dating to the late 18th century, with extensions added in the 19th century. Boundary walls extend to the east and north-east. The house is built of coursed, cut and squared blue Lias stone, with slate roofs featuring stepped, coped gables and stone stacks to the gable ends.
The house has a main three-bay, two-story range with an attic and a small cellar, accompanied by lower-height ranges to the north and south, and a late 20th/early 21st century conservatory at the rear. The front (east) elevation is symmetrical, with a central entrance framed by an ashlar Doric portico with columns, pilasters and a flat entablature. The entrance has a raised and fielded panel door and a rectangular fanlight above. There are timber sash windows with nine panes on either side of the entrance, and six-paned sashes on the first floor. A lower, single-story range is set back to the right, with a hipped roof and a tall, round-arched sash window to its west elevation. Extending north from the north-west corner of this range is another single-story range, its north gable end featuring a doorway with a wooden stable-type door and a late 20th century timber window. Set back to the left of the principal range is an attached range with a single window to the west elevation.
The boundary walls to the front (east) and north-east are constructed of blue Lias stone rubble with dressed stone capping. These walls have been slightly altered at their north-east ends to create an inturned entranceway to the house.
Former agricultural buildings to the southwest and west, now known as Gladstone House and Westville, have been significantly altered and remodelled. The north-west, southwest, and rear boundary walls have been largely rebuilt or are modern structures and do not possess special interest. Specifically excluded from the listing are Gladstone House, Westville, the modern detached garages at Littleton House and Westville, and the boundary walls to the north-west, southwest, and rear of Littleton House, as well as the inturned entrance walls at the north-east corner.
