Description
The former barn or stables and dovecote, located 20 metres northwest of The Grange, dates back to the 18th century. It is constructed from local stone rubble with brickwork dressings and features a plain clay tile roof with timbered gables, along with one section that has stone slate base courses and brick chimney stacks. The building is single storey with an attic and consists of four bays. It has small pane casement windows and plain boarded doors, with the window in bay 2 and the door in bay 3 featuring a brick segmental arch. There are 20th-century dormers added to bays 2, 3, and 4. The east gable displays two semi-circular brick arched doorways, above which is a former dovecote that has apertures on either side of a central casement window, which is topped with a brick segmental keystoned arch. The westernmost bay is likely older than the rest of the structure. This building is significant in the setting of The Grange. The dovecote originally housed 700 pigeons. Additionally, large ammonites are incorporated into the walls, possibly placed there by Reverend John Wickham, a naturalist who died in 1783.
