Description
Four headstones belonging to the Shurt family are set within a stone surround in the churchyard, located about 15 metres south of the porch of the Church of St Mary. This group of four headstones, dating from the late 17th century and early 18th century, features blue lias monolithic slabs embedded in a blue lias random rubble wall that stands about one metre high. The headstones are inscribed with clear lettering, including the names of Julian, who died in 1690, and Hugh, who died in 1709; however, the inscriptions on the other two headstones are no longer legible. At the time of the survey in August 1983, much of the stone surround was obscured by ivy. The Shurt family were prosperous clothiers and were the leaseholders of Kilve Mills in the early 18th century.
