Description
Wayside Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages. It dates from the 17th century but was altered in the late 19th to early 20th century. The building is constructed of blue lias and red sandstone random rubble, with signs that part of the ground floor wall has been rebuilt at some point. It features a double Rowan tile roof and brick stacks located at the left gable end, to the right of the cross passage, and at the junction where the end bay slightly projects forward. The layout suggests it may have originally been a three-cell structure with a cross passage, although the chimney arrangement is unusual. The building is two storeys high with four bays on the front and one bay on the side. The first floor has two-light casement windows, with the end two being leaded. The ground floor mainly has segmental-headed openings under brick relieving arches, including two three-light and one two-light casement windows flanking the entrance. There are remains of a four-light moulded mullion window on the right. The end bay features a 17th-century moulded doorframe with a small glazed opening beyond, a studded plank door on the right, and a ribbed plank door on the left. The interior has not been viewed.
