Description

This is an 18th-century mill with alterations from the 19th century, situated in Stapleton. It is constructed of rubble, with areas of whitewash, and has a double-Roman and pantile roof. The building is laid out in an L-shape and has three storeys with an irregular pattern of windows. A millrace is elevated to the west, entering the building at the first floor level via a segmental archway, which feeds an overshot iron water wheel. To the right of the building is a throughway, featuring a large wooden lintol. A roughly central entrance has a planked door, and there are 2, 3, and 4-light casement windows. The interior retains a complete set of milling machinery, including applewood gear wheels and a substantial wooden centre shaft, along with millstones, housings, and grain hoppers. At the time of re-survey in February 1985, the mill was undergoing conversion into a dwelling.
