Description

Hazelwell House is a house dating to circa 1850. The main block is constructed of Ham Hill stone ashlar, with incised stucco to the right side; the roof is slate, hipped to the extension to the right. It has stepped stone copings and brick stacks to the gable ends of the main block. The architectural style is symmetrical, with a three-window range to the left (west) and a single-window range to the right extension. The windows are 20th-century one-over-one sash windows. Ground-floor windows on the left have louvred shutters, likely originally circa 1800 sliding ones. All windows have moulded architraves and keystones, and the left side features raised Ham Hill stone rusticated quoins, with similar details having been removed from the left side. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top of the house.

The house is set back and elevated, accessed by steps leading to a Tuscan-style doorcase featuring a dentil-detailed open pediment and reeded engaged columns. The front door is six-panelled, with four raised-and-fielded panels and added mouldings to the lower ones, accompanied by a semicircular fanlight. The interior has not been inspected.

Attached to the rear right corner is a high limestone rubble wall, which encloses a small garden. There are stone gate piers at the far left of the front, with swept caps and balls. Mid-19th century railings run along the front, composed of square-section loops alternating with spearheads, set on a rendered Ham Hill stone plinth. Double gates opposite the front door have long loops through a concavely-curved upper rail, spearheads through a lower one, and a row of circles and diamonds at the base; the gate catch is leaf-shaped.
