Description

The Grange is a detached house located on Burrough Street in Ash, dating from the 17th century and modified over time. It is constructed from ham stone ashlar with squared rubble on the sides and rear, topped with a plain clay tile roof that has a stone slate base course and stepped coped gables. The house has two storeys with an attic and features five bays.

The windows include two patterns of mullioned designs; the upper windows are hollow-chamfered in a shallow recess with horizontal-bar inserts, while the lower windows are small ovolo-moulded in wave-mould recesses, all being three-light. The lower bay three contains a six-panelled door set in a recess with a later architrave, topped by a square label, and there is a flat-roofed dormer window above this bay. The north gable has a two-light mullioned window without a label and a small circular window, with additional mullioned windows present in the south gable.

Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to have a cross-passage three-room plan, with a six-panel ceiling in the centre room, cased beams, and a cambered fireplace with an 18th-century recess to the side. There is a blocked fireplace in the east room that dates from the 19th century.

Approximately two metres from the house, there is a low stone wall with a curved return at the southeast corner, featuring wrought iron with slight necking and spear tips, along with cast urn finials on the gate standards and a moulded top rail. The gate matches this design and includes an added middle rail, contributing to the setting of the house and enhancing the streetscape.
