Description

No. 29 on Burrough Street is a detached house dating from the 17th century. It is constructed of near-ashlar ham stone and features a double Roman clay tile roof with a coped gable at the south and a hipped roof to the north, along with yellow brick chimney stacks. The house has an 'L' plan and stands two stories tall with six bays.

On the upper level, there are two-light simple-mullioned windows, likely from the 20th century, positioned above the original top of the walls. The lower level features hollow-chamfered mullioned windows with three and two lights beneath a shared label, followed by a chamfered three-centre arched doorway under a separate label, which is set higher. There are also three, two, and three-light windows beneath a shared lintel. A lean-to is attached to the south gable, and there is a return wing from the north-west corner. The interior has not been seen.

Approximately 2.5 meters from the house is a cut and squared stone wall topped with vertically set stones. Opposite the doorway are a pair of stone gatepiers with chamfered plinths and stepped pyramid caps, which may have been reclaimed from another location. There are no gates, but there are ten segmental steps leading up to the gateway, with the first step projecting beyond the entrance. This arrangement enhances the overall setting of the house.
