Description

South End House is a detached villa-style house dating to circa 1840. It is constructed of local lias stone, squared and cut, with dressings of Ham stone, and has a hipped roof of Welsh slate, along with a stone chimney stack. The house is two storeys high and has three bays. Features include a plinth, rusticated quoins, and a coffered eaves soffite. The windows are 16-pane sashes in plain openings with voussoired flat arches. The central bay has a 6-panel door set within a semi-circular arched opening, which has a radial glazed fanlight, and is protected by an open timber porch with Tuscan columns and pilasters, as well as a full plain entablature. The porch's interior was not inspected.

To the west of the house, approximately 15 metres away, is a front boundary wall constructed of lias stone, with curved returns to the gates. The wall is plainly coped. A pedestrian gate has rusticated Ham stone piers, with plinths, bell-hip caps, and ball finials. The car access gates have stone piers with plain, shallow pyramidal caps. The wrought iron gates have spearhead middle-rail finials and scroll tops. The pedestrian gate is from the 19th century, while the others are 20th-century replacements. The gates enhance the setting of the house.
