Description

School House is a detached house built in 1570 and later. It is constructed from local lias stone that is both rough and squared, with Hal stone dressings, and features a clay pantiled roof between roped gables and brick end chimney stacks. The building has two storeys and three side bays. Bays one and two contain three-light hollow chamfer mullioned windows, with a square label above the lower bay one window. Bay three features ovolo-mould mullioned windows, with three lights above and four lights below, the latter also having a label. All windows have G20 steel casement inserts. The lower bay two has a two-light window and a 20th-century doorway to the right, all under a label, which includes an 18th-century style 12-panel door with a glazed light and sidelights. The lintel over the door is incised with "The Old School House 1598-1937."

There is a single-storey extension attached to the west gable and a flat-roofed extension on the north side. The interior has been much altered, but it features a plaque that was formerly above the front door and is now set over the west gable fireplace. The plaque reads "VT PIASIT, STVDIIS Q. VACET GENEROSA IVVENTS/ HANC ADRIANUS.SCHAELL. SUSTINETAERE/SCHOLAM 1598." Additionally, there are some chamfered cross-beams and a circular stone stair located in the north-west corner against the fireplace. The building was constructed by the Rector appointed in 1570, as his churchwardens could neither read nor write. Srhaell was previously a tutor to Lord Grey's children.
