Description

A mill and attached mill house, likely originating in the 16th century and rebuilt in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with a stone tile roof. A central rubble chimney rises from the structure, with additional brick chimneys situated at each end of the frontage. A small gabled dormer is centrally placed on the roof. The building has an ‘L’ shape, with two storeys and attics, and consists of five bays. Windows are casements with glazing bars.

The mill house section has two door openings, one between the fourth and fifth bays, which is now blocked and features a dressed stone surround with a moulded stone hood resting on cut stone brackets. A further door opening, with a plank door within a large 20th-century glazed porch, is located in the third bay. A third door leads to the mill, which is situated at a right angle to the left side of the mill house, straddling the millstream, and is accessed by three rough stone steps as the ground rises to the entrance.

On the left return, which abuts the mill pond, are three prominent buttresses with offsets. The mill stream enters the building at first-floor level, flowing to a 19th-century Gilkes turbine of Kendal inside. This turbine drives two sets of working millstones. A single-storey rubble outshut, featuring casement windows and two plank doors, extends to the right of the frontage. A projecting stone spiral staircase is located at the rear of the mill house.
