Description

Crown Mills is a flour mill, now functioning as a furniture warehouse, located on Chilton Road in Bridgwater. It was built in the early to mid-19th century, with deeds dating back to 1844. The structure is made of red Wembdon Hill rubblestone and features a hipped double Roman tile roof. It has a rectangular plan with a forward outshut to the right and stands three storeys tall.

The first stage of the building originally had a symmetrical two-window range, which was later altered to a three-window range with a vertical joint between them. The original windows are cast-iron two-light casements, with one remaining at the eaves level on the left, while the others have been replaced with 20th-century windows or blocked. There are three loading bays on the first floor, with a gauged stone segmental arch on the left and concrete lintels over the others. A wide gauged stone segmental-arched entrance is located in the centre of the left-hand block, featuring 20th-century doors. The projecting forward wing has segmental arches above 20th-century windows.

On the left return facing Chilton Street, there are three two-light cast-iron windows on each floor. Inside, the two stages of the building are distinct; the first stage on the left has two heavy oak beams running parallel to the front, supported by cast-iron columns. The second stage has two beams positioned at right angles to the front, with more slender cast-iron columns. The first floor mirrors this arrangement, while the second floor features queen-post trusses supported at the centres by one cast-iron pillar, with five bays on each half. The mill was originally steam-powered and is situated at the north-west corner of the inner harbour.
