Description
The Somerset College of Art is an imposing neo-Classical building dated 1905, designed by C. Samson and A. B. Cottam. It features two storeys and a basement, constructed of ashlar stone with a rusticated plinth. A central triangular pediment, adorned with a cartouche, artistic putti, and elaborate foliation, rises above a dentil eaves cornice and a balustered parapet. The façade is divided by Ionic pilasters, with a recessed central section flanked by Ionic columns. The second (mezzanine) floor includes semi-circular windows with keystones and aprons, while the ground floor windows have architrave surrounds, and there are semi-circular openings in the basement. The building has five windows with large metal frames. It is part of a group of listed buildings in Bath Place and Corporation Street, excluding No. 34 and the Dragon Book Shop and Wall.
