Description
This is a cottage in a row, likely dating to the early 19th century, although it may incorporate older fabric behind the front facade. The front is faced with ham stone ashlar, while the gables are of coursed rubble. It has a thatched roof with a stepped and coped west gable, continuing to the east, and a stone slab chimney stack. The cottage has two storeys and three bays. It features sash windows in plain openings: 16-pane windows are found in the outer bays, and a 12-pane window in the upper bay. The lower bay has a 6-panel door with toplights, set in a beaded surround and covered by a flat stone hood on corbel brackets, with an additional hood mould above. A doorway to the basement is present, and bay 3 has chamfered mouldings which suggest earlier work. The interior has not been inspected. Approximately 1.5 metres south of the house is a low stone wall, constructed in near-ashlar, with a cast iron rail fence positioned on top. The rails are approximately 300mm and 600mm above the wall, supported by uprights at intervals of about 1.5 metres, with returns to the doorway. This wall and fence contribute to the setting of the cottage and enhance the street scene.
