Description

Little Norton Mill is an 18th-century watermill located in Norton sub Hamdon. It is constructed of ham stone rubble with some ashlar dressings, and has a plain clay tiled roof with a coped west gable and a gabletted finial. The mill is two stories high with an attic. On the north side, at the east end, is a full-height opening for the waterwheel, approximately 4 metres in diameter and made of cast iron with elm buckets, apparently undershot. To the right of the wheel opening are three bays, featuring 2-light small-pane casement windows in the upper bay and lower bay 2. Blocked doorways are present in the lower bays 1 and 3. The west gable wall has plain doors at ground and first floor levels; the lower door is of an older pattern, and the upper door features a fanlight. A single-light, chamfered window with a leaded window is set within a chamfered recess in the attic, below a stone plaque incised with "8/TD/1782". A 20th-century garage building is attached to the south-east corner of the mill. The interior is reportedly still home to some machinery.
