Description
This is an 18th-century cottage in a row, located on the east side of Broadmead Lane in Norton sub Hamdon. The building is constructed from ham stone rubble with ashlar dressings. Several courses of brick at the head of the wall indicate a former thatched roof, now replaced with a double Roman clay tiled roof. The gables are stepped and coped, and there are brick end chimney stacks. The cottage has two storeys and two bays.
On the ground floor are a three-light and two-light hollow-chamfered mullioned window, without labels. Above are two early-pattern two-light timber casements with a continuous timber plate and rectangular-leaded panes, set within iron frames. A doorway with a balection mould surround, possibly a 19th-century addition, features a late 17th/early 18th-century door with ovolo moulding. Attached to the front wall is a complete cast iron water pump, with a handle and a cast iron trough set on a brick base. The interior has not been inspected. Local reports suggest the cottages were originally a row of former flax sheds.
