Description

Chindit House is a small house dating to 1903. It was built by a local builder, John Merrick, for his own use, and exhibits rich Gothic detailing. The asymmetrical facade is constructed of ashlar and has a slate roof with bargeboards, an eaves cornice featuring decorative paterae, a stringcourse, and a plinth. A two-story bay is located to the left, with small, rectangular openings set in curved splays. Two brick chimneys rise at a 45-degree angle from the top of this bay. Above them is a small oculus and a carved panel incorporating the date 1903 intertwined with the initials J M. A small oriel window is located on the first floor to the right, also featuring rich Gothic foliage and cornices with paterae. The front has three windows, with foiled heads and pointed lights on the ground floor and over the doorway, the ground floor lights featuring decorated spandrels. The central doorway is topped with an elongated open pediment supported by columns with foliated capitals, and contains a five-panel door with a fanlight and small side-lights.
