Description
This is a post office wall letter box located immediately east of The Warren in Henstridge, dating from 1857 to 1859. It is made of cast iron and was produced by Smith and Hawkes of Birmingham. The letter box measures 240 millimeters wide and 740 millimeters deep, featuring a three-panel front with a hinged internal flap for the letter aperture. The wall supporting the letter box is constructed of rubble, standing about 1.7 meters high and 2 meters long, and is lime rendered. This letter box is notable as the first pattern wall letter box used by the Post Office, with only six known to still be in use today, according to the Letter Box Study Group.
