Description
This building began as a hospital in the 17th century and later served as a barn before being converted into a house. An inscribed stone plaque on the south gable indicates it was built by John Westover, a surgeon, in 1680. The building has undergone alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of layered rubble stone, with local Wedmore stone at ground level and blue lias stone on the first floor, with dressed quoins. It features coped verges, bases for the finials, and a weathervane on the south side.
The building is two stories high with an attic. The east-facing front has two bays and includes 2- and 3-light windows with ovolo-moulded mullions. These windows have stopped labels, with the one on the left made of stone and the others of concrete. A moulded string runs along the first floor and continues as part of the coping on a short section of squared rubble wall to the south. The south elevation features a central doorway with a moulded stone surround and a 4-centred head, with a 20th-century half-glazed door. Additional 2- and 3-light ovolo-moulded stone mullioned windows are also present.
