Description
The mounting block, likely from the 18th century or early 19th century, is made from a single piece of dressed sandstone and features two steps, with a possible third step hidden by the surrounding raised ground. It has a simple design and shows significant weathering.
It is located on the road verge next to a blocked gateway leading to a triangular piece of land that appears on the 1851 Ordnance Survey map. This land is now part of the garden of the current Rectory. Directly across the lane is a blocked carriage entrance to the Old Rectory.
There is speculation that the mounting block was linked to a house that once stood on the triangular parcel of land, which was likely demolished before the 1851 map was created, possibly to enhance the view from the former carriage entrance to the Old Rectory.
The mounting block is designated at grade II because, despite its simplicity, it is a good example of a once-common piece of street furniture that reflects the historical significance of horse transport. It is believed to date from before 1840 and remains in its original location.
