Description

This is a late 17th-century manor house located on Castle Street in Spofforth with Stockeld. The house is constructed of coursed gritstone with a pantile roof, featuring eaves courses of stone slates. It follows a lobby-entry plan, with two rooms deep and four bays wide. The architectural style is characterized by long and short chamfered quoins. The central doorway has a 20th-century board door and rectangular overlight, set within a moulded stone architrave. All windows have stone sills and lintels, with 20th-century wooden cross-mullions. A band runs along the first-floor level, projecting slightly above the window openings. The building features paired stone gutter brackets, an ashlar coping, and shaped kneelers. A large central stack is a notable feature. Small rectangular board doors, set in double-chamfered stone surrounds, are present in the left and right gable ends. Inside, the front room on the left contains a large stone fireplace with roll moulding, and an early to mid-18th-century staircase with turned balusters. A single-storey addition to the left incorporates a 20th-century bow window, pantile roof, and gable coping. The building was formerly an apothecary's shop.
