Description

A row of four houses located on Castle Street in Spofforth with Stockeld, dating to the late 17th century with 20th-century alterations. The houses are constructed of coursed gritstone with a pantile roof. Nos. 47 and 49 are two storeys high with three first-floor windows. The main entrance, situated between the two right-hand windows, features a 20th-century glazed door with a large ogee lintel bearing the inscription ‘I. S. 1682’ and a chamfered surround. A hoodmould above the door extends over the window to its left. A 20th-century opening with a glazed door is located between the windows to the left. Ground-floor windows on the left and centre have 20th-century frames with plate glass. A remaining hoodmould is visible on the far left. Ground-floor windows on the right and first-floor windows have 20th-century 16-pane and 12-pane casements respectively. Nos. 51 and 53 have 20th-century glazed doors and casements with glazing bars. Ashlar copings and shaped kneelers are present, with a stack at each gable end and three additional stacks spaced along the ridge. Nos. 51 and 53 are included on the list for their contribution to the group value of the terrace, formerly known as Leconfield Terrace.
