Description
Chapman, Medd & Sons is a shop and office building dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of red-brown local brick laid in Flemish bond and features a wooden modillion eaves cornice. The roof is swept pantile with stone coping and kneelers, and there are end stacks. The building has two storeys and three bays. Access is via two stone steps leading to a central entrance, which consists of a six-panel door topped by an oblong fanlight, all set within a wooden case that has alternating block jambs and simple brackets supporting a pediment. To the left, there is an early 20th-century canted shop window bay. The remaining windows are 12-pane sashes with flush wood architraves, painted brick lintels with keyblocks, and cills. A three-course band runs along the first floor, and there is a raised forecourt on the right side only.
