Description
This is an 18th-century building on Grape Lane, part of a group that includes Captain Cook's House, the Clinic, and numbers 19 to 28. The building is four storeys high, with a basement, and features a rusticated stone ground floor. It has three windows to the front elevation, with double-hung sashes and triple keystones. Continuous cill bands run across the front. The ground floor has three windows and a central round-headed doorway with a blank fanlight featuring radiating spikes. Above the ground floor are two-storey wood fluted and enriched Ionic pilasters, topped by entablatures. A simple cornice runs along the front, above which is a parapet with open panels.
The court frontage has a six-fielded door with an ornamental semi-circular fanlight and side lights. A unique “bottlenecked” window extends from the upper level to the parapet, illuminating the staircase and containing 60 panes of glass; a three-light sash window is located to the right on each upper floor, with the ground floor window featuring Ionic wood columns. The building has a flat roof with an octagonal "Chinese" lantern.
The interior retains fine panelled rooms, a notable well staircase, and largely unaltered period features throughout. The front room on the first floor contains an 18th-century built-in cast iron safe.
