Description

This is a milepost dating from the late 19th century, made of cast iron and supported by gritstone. It has a triangular section with a rounded top. The lettering on the top in relief capitals reads "KEIGHLEY AND KENDAL / ROAD / KILDWICK". The left face indicates distances with "SKIPTON 4½ MILES / SETTLE 19½ MILES / KENDAL 49 MILES", while the right face states "KEIGHLEY 5 MILES". The Kendal-Keighley road, which passes through Skipton and Kirkby Lonsdale, was developed in the early 18th century to enhance the transport of wool from Westmorland and Craven to the clothiers in the West Riding at Halifax market.
