Description
Old Holme Farmhouse and Hudson Cottage is a house and adjoining cottage dating from the mid to late 18th century, with 19th-century alterations. The front is faced with hammer-dressed sandstone, while the sides are constructed of brick in English bond, topped with a plain tile roof. The cottage is entered from the left, while the house has a central entrance. The building is two stories high and features five first-floor windows.
On the left side, there is a four-fielded-panel door with two 16-pane sash windows to its left. To the right, a six-panel door is flanked by 16-pane sashes, all set beneath wedge lintels. On the first floor, there is a blocked window, flanked by a 16-pane sash and a two-light Yorkshire sash on the left, and a sash with glazing bars flanked by 16-pane sashes on the right.
Inside, the kitchen fireplace has a bressumer, and there is a closed-string staircase with a column-on-vase design leading to Holme Farmhouse. Notably, Hudson Cottage was the birthplace of George Hudson, known as "The Railway King," who lived from 1800 to 1871.
