Description
The retaining walls, steps, and fountain located to the east and south of the formal garden at Broughton Hall were constructed in 1855 by W A Nesfield. The low solid stone wall supports an earth bank and extends approximately 130 meters from the Garden Pavilion to a point west of the conservatory at the rear of the Hall. There are two flights of stone steps: a simple one at the western end and a double set that accommodates a fountain featuring a clam shell and dolphins. Urns are placed on a dais at regular intervals along the wall. This structure is part of the semi-formal setting of Broughton Hall and delineates the boundary between the formal and wilderness gardens.
