Description

Barstow House is an early 19th-century house located on Moor Lane in Newton-on-Ouse. The building is constructed of rendered brick and features a Welsh slate roof. It is two storeys high and has five bays. The garden front includes steps leading to a central glazed door, which is topped by a fanlight with glazing bars. This door is flanked by pilasters that support a cornice. On either side of the door, there is a bow window with 20th-century glazing, a 20th-century cross-window on the left, and a 20th-century French window on the right. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows set in flush wood architraves with stone cills, and there is a modillion cornice above. The house features brick stacks at both ends and two ridge stacks. A 20th-century addition to the right is not of special interest.

At the rear, there are lower, hipped wings that project at each end, and a round-arched stair window. Inside, the house has panelled doors and cornices. The rear stair-hall door includes top-glazing with glazing bars. The original kitchen on the front right has chamfered spine beams. There is also a dog-leg open-string staircase with wave-moulded details, finely-turned balusters, and a moulded spiral-curtailed handrail.
