Description

Orchard House is a house dating from the mid-18th century, built for the Bourchiers of Beningbrough Hall. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond and has a pantile roof. The building has two storeys with an attic and features four first-floor windows. The entrance has a 20th-century door set in a flush wood architrave, which is topped by a flat soldier-brick arch and is sheltered by a gable porch added later. The doorway is flanked by 20th-century tripartite sash windows, which include two unequally-hung 9-pane sashes and two 16-pane sashes above. All windows are framed in flush wood architraves. There is a two-course band at the first-floor level and dentilled eaves. The roof is steeply pitched, with a ridge stack on the left and an end stack to the right.

At the rear, there is one 16-pane sash window and a 20th-century wing on the right that is not of special interest. The left gable features a door on the left, a 16-pane sash window on both the ground and first floors, and an 8-light sash in the gable, which has iron I-ties. The right return has an external stack on the ground floor that enters the house at first-floor level. Inside, the left room has stop-chamfered spine beams and joists, with the spine beams being scarf-jointed, suggesting the presence of a former fire-hood. The house is said to have been built by the Bourchiers for their bailiff.
