Description

Numbers 1 to 7 and the iron railings to the entrance steps form a terrace of seven dwellings, now converted into flats, built between 1850 and 1851. The design is by Henry Spink. The buildings are constructed of brick, with stucco finishes, and have slate roofs with stucco and rendered stacks. They are three storeys high, with a basement and attic. Each house has two bays, and the end bays are emphasized by giant Corinthian pilasters on a rusticated ground floor, which extend up to support the eaves entablature. The entrances consist of four-panel double doors with overlights, accessed by cantilevered flights of steps. To the left of the doors are tripartite sash windows, with one on the left now altered to a full-height bow window. Bracketed cornices adorn the first-floor sash windows, with bracketed pediments to the end bays. Eared architraves frame the second-floor windows. First and second-floor string courses run along the facade. Dormers have been added to the attic in the 20th century. The return fronts are treated as pedimented temple fronts, with four-panel double doors beneath scrolled console cornices. Ramped-up iron railings are present to each flight of entrance steps.
