Description

The War Memorial Archway, built in 1921 and altered after 1945, serves as a memorial to those from Filey who died in the two World Wars. Constructed from Portland stone, it features bronze plaques and lettering, along with wrought iron gates.

The archway is designed in a Neo-classical style, with double gates that lead into a memorial garden. The main inscription, located on the parapet above the arch and facing the public road, reads 'IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF FILEY/ WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE TWO WORLD WARS' in raised bronze lettering. On the left pier of the arch, there is a bronze plaque listing the 72 names of the Fallen from the First World War, with a wreathed shield above it bearing the dates '1914 1918'. The right pier mirrors this design, listing 53 names from the Second World War and featuring a shield with the dates '1939 1945'.

Inside the left pier, a small bronze plaque is inscribed 'ADEN 1964 Davis M.F.', while the right pier has a plaque inscribed 'KOREA 1950-1953 Mason P.'. The gates have arched tops that bear the words 'MEMORIAL GARDENS', though they are otherwise simply designed. The rear of the archway, which faces the gardens, is architecturally blank but includes two small plaques: one commemorating the gift of the land to the town in 1916 and another marking the centenary of the First World War.

It is noted that the memorial garden and the fencing flanking the archway are not included in the listing.
