Description
Royal Crescent Court, originally a hotel and now flats, was constructed in 1853 for J W Unett. The building is brick, stuccoed to the front and sides, with a rendered rear elevation and a slate roof. It is four storeys high, with a basement and attic, and comprises five bays, the central and end bays projecting. The central projecting portico features paired Doric columns and a balustrade, leading to double doors that are half-panelled and half-glazed with bevelled glass. A keyed Venetian window sits above the portico, with a tripartite sash window on the second floor. The end bays each have tripartite sash windows in square bays on the ground floor. First-floor windows have detached console cornices; second-floor windows have moulded surrounds; third-floor windows have eared architraves, and gabled dormers are present in the attic. A continuous wrought iron balcony runs along the first floor, complemented by a second-floor sill band and a modillion cornice to the third floor, culminating in a moulded eaves cornice. Stacks project through the hipped roof. The return fronts feature four-storey bow windows flanking the central bay, with a single window on each floor. The fenestration and features of the main front are replicated on the returns. Approximately 1.5-metre-high cast-iron railings are affixed to a low stone plinth along the front and sides of the terrace. Four fine cast-iron lamp pedestals, standing approximately 2 metres high, remain at the outer corners and on each side of the portico.
